Christmas is coming!!

VTech is a toy manufacturer that has its roots into a lot of peoples childhood, mine includes. In a discussion, I remembered the data breach VTech encountered in 2015 where most toys data with an internet access were exposed. This raised a curiosity and made it apparent that there is a big contrast between an electronic toys aesthetic and its electrical circuit. A lot of design efforts are put into making cute casings, interfaces, sounds but the circuit itself stays relatively simple and easy to circuit bend and tamper with.

This installation seeks to highlight this contrast by exposing and controlling the circuit of a camera purchased at Intertoys. Using a modified phone, sequences are being sent from a distance to the camera making it remotely controlled. In this Christmas narrative, I’m aiming to make the context where such toys are being bought and gifted fit this contrast of aesthetic and electronics.Β
