A past which longed for the future, now a future which longs for the past
As part of the MAFA Festival 2024, DAT students have been asked to produce a video in the theme of LESS. In collaboration with Maroua Gaddur and Sep van der Spiegel, we started this project with an interest in low quality videos. We found that videos from 18 years ago on youtube all have similar aesthetic properties like low resolution, over exposure and compressed audio due to the lower quality of cameras. The low quality properties give these videos today a sense of nostalgia which we found interesting to explore.
The video we used is from 2005 and already had that visual feeling of a memory with kids playing at the sea. Our video wants to show the progression of a moment into a fading memory and the feeling of longing for a blurry past.
The video has been shown at Focus Filmtheater and Museum Arnhem during the length of the festival.
